Excellent Laptop (2009-05-01)
I was looking for a fast but not too expensive laptop and this one did the trick. I love it so far. I only needed this for personal use like surfing the net, listening to music, etc... It works just great so far. The only real con I would say is the sound. The speakers leave a lot to be desired. I can hardly hear bass in any of my songs. Well, I don't really have to listen to songs from my laptop speakers so it doesn't bother me too much. Other than that, it's a great laptop!

I had been keeping my eye on this Samsung notebook and was saving up the money for a few months. I am a college student, so as I monitored it on amazon's website, I saw the price go up and down repeatedly. By the time I had the money for it, it was a straight $832. It looks now like they have a better deal going on for $744 for this same one. It has a widescreen 16-inch 16:9 HD LCD display. It displays brightness, it is full of color, and the resolution is 1366x768, which suits me just fine. It has a built in numeric keypad with a lot of easy (fn) commands in blue all over the notebook's keys for very convenient volume control, brightness, etc. This is an eco-friendly notebook and is energy star certified. The graphics card, an NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS has run all of my graphic intensive programs with ease. It came with a Core 2 Duo Processor (2.00 gHz) and 3GB of RAM. Ethernet and power cord plug in from the back, so while the screen is up they are hidden behind you and not getting in the way on the sides of the laptop. It also has 2 USB ports on the back, 1 on the left side, and 1 on the right side, making 4 total. The USB ports on the sides are located right at top, so if you're plugging in external objects they're not in the way. Built in bluetooth works great, so does webcam. Wireless N card is fast with speeds up to 5X stronger/faster. Fan is quiet and modest on noise. Internal speakers are par for a notebook. I have always used external speakers with a subwoofer. Integrated Recovery Solution with Samsung was extremely easy and helpful to use. Very fast and comes with 3 recovery disks which some computer manufacturers don't offer. The battery has a button on it that you press that shows an indicator of how much battery life is left without needing to turn the notebook on. This has been extremely convenient for me on the go. It came with windows vista home premium, but I currently have a dual boot setup of windows vista on one partition and windows xp on the other partition. I repeat: This notebook is 100% compatible with Windows XP and there are drivers available for the R610-64G notebook from Samsung for all of the hardware. Hope this helps!

Great value & well equipped (2009-03-27)
Samsung R610 Notebook: Hard to beat what you get for the price especially compared to what other brands have to offer. Generous size clear screen with 1366 x 768 resolution which is more than what most computers for the same price and size. 3GB of memory standard, expandable to 4GB, that is dedicated to applications with an additional 512MB built-in dedicated (not shared) for graphics. Most computer brands offer less memory and must share it for graphics. Built in Bluetooth which is great for a Bluetooth wireless mouse without the need for a receiver to stick out of the side. This frees up a USB port and no fear of breaking off the wireless receiver. Four USB2.0 ports located on three convenient sides. Ethernet network & B/G wireless built in for internet/network connection. DVD/CD burner. Multicard memory slot. VGA & HDMI ports for an additional monitor/TV but too bad they mounted it on the side and not in the rear. One expansion port. Built-in camera. Headphones and microphone ports. Looks nice too but from use finger prints become real noticeable on its glossy black lacquer finish. No docking station available. A 7200RPM and/or 320GB hard drive would have been nice but I cannot complain for the price paid. Great value for the money. Hard to beat it. Highly recommend it if you are looking for a well equipped laptop for under $1000.

Spectacular Laptop (2009-01-19)
This laptop is the best one for the money. At the time, it was $799. I saw the price jump to $999 shortly after I bought it, and now it's $899. Even that is great. You don't see many laptops these days with dedicated graphics cards/memory. They usually have controllers built into the motherboard. And if a laptop has a graphics card, it normally is over $1,500. Before I found this Samsung, I was looking at Sony, Toshiba, Acer, and Asus laptops. The closest ones were about twice as much as this Samsung.

One and only CON: Screen has a weak max resolution. If you're like me, and you need 1600x1200 or higher resolution, this laptop doesn't cut it. If you do a Vista rating test on it, it will only get a 3.8 because of the screen. All of the sub categories will show above 5 except for screen which will show 2.5 because of the screen.

Not sure why exactly Samsung would put a weak screen on such a great laptop. Maybe that's why the price is so inexpensive.

Gaming computer (2009-01-06)
This computer is the value point buy. I bought it when it first came out and paid a premium price (over one thousand dollars). It has sold at times under eight hundred dollars and is a bargain at that price! The reason I bought this was that my son wanted a laptop that could play all the games he had collected but was unable to play on his old computer. This computer has 500MB of video memory and three GIGs of conventional memory and has a nice Intel chip, with a clip on battery that fits well into the back of the machine. The machine runs well and is truly a little treasure. Samsung seems to be doing everything right for most of their products and here is a good example of a laptop done right!
