Wide Color Enhancer/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72% of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp back lights to give you 92% coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.

Samsung’s exclusive Wide Color Enhancer technology delivers more brilliant colors, even in bright areas of the picture where blues and greens are washed out on conventional screens. The system displays wider color reproduction, showing you truer colors – the fresh green of spring foliage, the intense blue of the summer sky.

Audio Features

TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including internal television speakers and headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV.

SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass.

TruSurround XT audio also adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the sound stage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Stereo broadcast reception is offered for MTS and SAP with 181-channel capacity. A sound leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5
  • Series 5 1080p LCD HDTVs are available in 32-inch, 37-inch, 40-inch, 46-inch, and 52-inch models

Customer Reviews

images a little squatty (2008-12-31)
I purchased this tv about a month ago for my bedroom. I need to get a special cable box for hd from my cable company and don't have one yet. To me, the color and contrast are fine, but I know with the box it will be much better. I'm not very techy, but the installer told me if I got special (HDMI?) cables, that would help also. I don't have the full HD setup for the true experience. That said, I find the images, especially peoples' heads and bodies, squatty. I know that sounds weird, but at first it really annoyed me. I'm getting used to it, but it still bothers me. I guess it's because of the overall shape of the tv...a longer retangular shape than the older tvs. I pointed it out to the installer, and he said that it wouldn't improve, that was the picture. Like others have pointed out, the sound is a little tinny and lacks fullness. I may set up some speakers at some point, but it can wait....doesn't bother me as much as the squatty images. Before I bought it, I did a lot of reading of ratings and opinions, and did a little research. Basically, I'm pretty satisfied. When I get the new cable box hooked up, with maybe those special cables, it should be improved.

Samsung 550 review (2008-12-22)
It took me an hour to set up the new Samsung. Directions were the best I've seen for an appliance like this..set up was a snap.

We love the HDTV even though we're still only getting an analog signal on cable. We're way out in the country to it may be awhile before HDTV is even available, but it's fun to see television in a different format, and the picture is better. Samsung has done their homework on this television. We're impressed with it.

the difference is nothing short of amazing (2008-12-21)
We don't have high definition service, BUT the clarity, color, sound and picture is every bit as perfect with analog cable reception as it is in the stores where they are using videos to demonstrate their high definition TVs. We can't imagine how much better it supposedly will be as it is outstanding now.

32" 1080p TV worth the extra? (2008-12-17)
720 or 1080 for a 32" LCD? Is it worth paying the extra $200 or so for "full HD"? Well after careful review of many TVs before choosing this one I came to the conclusion that it really depends on what you are going to use as a source. And yes you CAN see the difference between the two in only a 32" screen. Some PS3 games are only 720, and others are true 1080p, after looking at both sources seperately the difference is clear. Also take a close look in the background of blu ray movies, and look at the detail of things far far away from the camera. Where in the same movie on DVD those things are blurry, or not so visible.

I already owned a PS3, so the choice was easy. In order to see the true beauty and detail of certain games, and blu ray movies I owned, I needed to get a TV capable of 1080p. I figured why would I even have bought blu ray movies if I was just going to view them on a 720 screen? Waste of money... You might as well watch your old DVDs on a up converter. I also have cox digital cable, which is not close to 1080p. So when I watch basic cable, I am restricted to a 1080i image, which is inferior to the blu ray and PS3 images.

This TV delivers an amazing picture, and requires little configuration to the settings, to see it. Also i doesn't take too much time to turn on, or change inputs like some other LCDs do. There is a setting that allows you to configure the power consumption during standby. Also it is true, the speakers aren't the greatest. But who buys a TV for the sound anyways? Just hook up your reciever and your all set.
So why would you buy a 720 TV? Cause the guy at the store told you that you couldn't see the difference on such a small screen? Or because you truly dont have an HD source? So therefore I only recommend spending a lil extra if you plan on trying to really appreciate the capabilities of this screen.

Best 32 inch 1080p LCD on the market (2008-12-16)
This lcd tv is just a great product that offers so many features. Two main features that offered by Samsung and not by other brands are the picture in picture and the usb port. The picture in picture can only be used for an analog signal with another source but still a very handy feature. The usb port is great for viewing pictures, listening to music and updating the firmware. Other brands offer sd card slots I would much rathere have the usb port. This tv produces excellent picture for all kinds of sources. The sd channels look great and the hd channels look almost perfect. The speakers are quite loud but dont have any bass. Would suggest on investing on exernal speakers if possible. I also use this tv as a monitor with the hdmi port. It looks really great no complaints. Was hopping to use the vga port instead but didnt look very good so had to use the hdmi port instead. The tv is nice and bright and produces a very crisp and sharp picture. Blu rays look awesome on it and so does my xbox 360 both connected via hdmi. There are ton of settings and modes to adjust to make it just right for you taste. I do wish it came with one more hdmi port. The size is just right for a bedroom. I would suggest a 40 inch or larger for the living room. I got it at a great price of $699 so I cant complain. Definietly worth the extra money to upgrade to 1080p if your going to be using it as monitor, for gaming and for more up close viewing. Overall excellent product which is quite light and portable and doesnt use much power and very affordable.
