Good Camera (2009-06-28)
Good camera, used in a warehouse and shipping environment. Has enough depth to take pictures from dock into dark trailers.
EXCELLENT camera, just remember to use the right batteries (2009-05-29)
I have owned the hot pink Samsung S73 for 9 months (since August '08), and I am extremely happy with it. I got it on sale at Circuit City for less than $60, and it was worth every penny I spent and more. Like I commented on the other review, however, you NEED to get the right batteries for this camera or it will not meet your expectations. A pack of good quality 2000mAh or higher Nimh recheargeables should definitely do the trick. Alkalines will not last long at all, and for some reason they also cause the camera to freeze more often.
The picture quality is superb for a 7.2 megapixel camera, even better than my 8.0 megapixel GE A835. I have uploaded a couple of pictures from my vacation in Jamaica to show what I am talking about.
The S73 seems to be built very sturdily, while at the same time manages not to be too bulky, which can be an issue for cameras that use AA batteries.
The only minor issues that I've had with it is that there is a slightly long 4-5 second delay before the flash goes off when taking pictures after the camera is first turned on, and the flash recycle time is sometimes pretty slow, so it can be annoying when trying to take quick action shots one after the other using flash. Otherwise, this camera is excellent and I highly recommend it!
Okay camera, but not for small children (2009-05-14)
I've had this camera for a couple years now. My mother-in-law gave it to me for Chanukah after my daughter was born. It's a pretty good camera, the pictures are clear and the video function is really nice. The problem for me, is that it's slow, and it stops if there's any movement. If that's unclear, keep in mind that most of my pictures are of my kids, the oldest being 2 1/2. So I frame the picture, push the button, my daughter moves a little, and the camera doesn't go off, picture missed. I often have to press the button several times to get the camera to actually take a picture, because she moves so much, and by the time it actually does, I've often missed the moment. Canon, Sony, even Nikon all take pictures much quicker.
I wish I read the reviews (2009-02-28)
I only wish I had read the reviews here prior to purchasing the camera, and once again prior to sending it in to Samsung warranty when my camera stopped functioning and the lense was left protruding from the casing. Samsung warranty only pays for one (1) way shipping, so to use it you will have to pay for shipping (which cost me $5.60 using USPS).
The problem with this camera is that it does not like regular batteries (I was using Energizer Alkaline). You will need to purchase the expensive Lithium-Ion kind or similiar (Nickle-Cadium?) which cost substaintially more than their alkaline counterparts. Since this camera requires more power to work, from more expensive batteries, the cost of ownership of this camera rises proportionately. After reading the reviews here, the tech support for Samsung could have easily asked me to try the more expensive batteries seeing how it was such a common problem with this camera--or at least their own tech-support site could have listed it more precisely. I really feel cheated by purchasing this camera because it was simply misleading to claim it runs on regular AA batteries when it fact it doesn't. How would you feel if you bought a car and later found out the car doesn't even turn on unless you put in 100octane gasoline (race-fuel) which is not only more expensive to buy but hard to come by?
I don't recommend this camera what-so-ever to anybody for any reason. If you so happen to receive one as a gift, quickly re-gift it to somebody you don't care for or give it to charity before you're in the middle of your family vacation only to be left without a camera.
Not good picture quality (2009-02-21)
My boyfriend bought me this camera for my birthday. I had been wanting a new digital camera to replace my old Fuji Finepix, which I had for four years. He just went to the store and picked something out, no research on it or anything. The camera was OK at first, but it does suck away batteries. I purchased rechargeables for it after a month or two. You have to have rechargeables for it, otherwise you will waste so much money on batteries. I've owned the Samsung for about a year and a half, and I just think the picture quality is awful especially shooting indoors or in lower light. The only time I got decent pictures is outside on a sunny day. I recently put some photos onto a flash drive and had them printed out at Costco. They really looked awful. Even playing around with the settings, trying higher pixels, etc. did not help picture quality. I would not reccommend this camera, I plan to go back to a Fuji or a Kodak.
